    Mission

We help artists master oil painting through clarity, repetition, and critique. Our curriculum removes guesswork, creating a path from first brushstrokes to confident, original work.

Stormcoast focuses on the decisions that matter at the easel—drawing accuracy, value structure, and clean color—so learners build a dependable process and transform uncertainty into deliberate action.

    Teaching Principles

    • Visible progress through small, focused drills.
    • Color and value decisions supported by structured checklists.
    • Repeatable studio routines to build consistency.
    • Actionable critique with clear next steps.
    • Constraints that encourage creativity instead of blocking it.

    Timeline

    • Founding: A small studio formed to eliminate confusion in beginner oil painting.
    • Curriculum v2: Added live critique and structured assignments.
    • Studio Methods: Introduced limited palettes and value grouping routines.
    • Today: A minimalist learning system trusted by focused learners globally.

    Team

Mentors with studio and teaching experience across portrait, landscape, and design, committed to practical feedback. We emphasize clarity over jargon and guide students with specific, testable next steps.

    • Portrait discipline: edge hierarchy, planar thinking, and likeness checkpoints.
    • Landscape discipline: atmospheric perspective, value masses, and color temperature control.
    • Design discipline: composition, rhythm, and shape language for stronger statements.

    The logic of drills

Short, repeatable drills isolate one decision at a time. By removing variables, the artist can measure improvement quickly and build confidence through repetition.

Our drills include timed value grouping, color matching from swatches, and edge classification passes. Each drill maps to a specific habit at the easel.

    From confusion to clarity

Stormcoast began as a weekly meetup on the northern shoreline, where a handful of painters shared failed studies and mapped the sticking points that blocked momentum. The notes became checklists; the checklists became assignments; the assignments became a curriculum focused on decisions, not outcomes.

Today the approach is intentionally minimal: few tools, clear constraints, and feedback that respects time. The result is progress you can see on canvas and measure in your sketchbook.

    Mentor perspectives

Our mentors balance studio practice with pedagogy. Each critique answers two questions: what worked, and what to try next. We avoid vague praise and replace it with specific, observable suggestions.

Portrait: building likeness by staging large shape accuracy before features. Landscape: massing value families and reserving edge variation for focal zones. Design: orchestrating a hierarchy so that the painting reads from across the room.
